Today, people make castor oil packs to treat a variety of health concerns, from premenstrual pain to belly bloat and arthritis pain. The topical treatment uses an oil made from the Ricinus communis plant, a woody shrub native to East Africa.

These ancient civilizations had no scientific evidence to back up their claims, but modern research has confirmed castor oil’s beneficial properties. And, more specifically, the advantages of castor oil packs.

What is castor oil?

“Castor oil is a plant-based oil pressed from castor beans, which are mainly found in India and Brazil,” says Taz Bhatia, MD, a board-certified integrative medicine physician and women’s health expert. The oil contains various nutrients, but it is particularly high in fatty acids that help ease inflammation throughout the body.

What is a castor oil pack?

A castor oil pack consists of several pieces of unbleached wool felt or cotton flannel soaked in castor oil. To use the soaked cloths, you simply lie them on the area you want to treat and cover the cloth with plastic wrap (to keep warmth in and prevent messiness). You can also apply a heating pad on top to optimize penetration of the oil. Most doctors recommend leaving the castor oil pack in place for 30 to 45 minutes. Health benefits of castor oil packs

A castor oil packs allow you to reap the anti-inflammatory rewards of the oil by allowing it to absorb through your skin. While more research needs to be done, there are various potential health benefits of using castor oil packs, including:

Castor oil packs relieve constipation

People have been using castor oil as a laxative for hundreds of years, but castor oil packs provide similar benefits without a sudden or intense urge to use the toilet.

One study conducted by researchers in Turkey found that castor oil packs were an effective treatment for older adults with constipation.

In the study, participants used a castor oil pack for three days in a row. At the end of that period, researchers found that the seniors who used the castor oil packs also had softer stools that were easier to pass. The castor oil packs didn’t increase the number of bowel movements participants had, but they did reduce symptoms of constipation, like bloating and straining. Castor oil packs minimize menstrual cramps and pelvic pain

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, both of which have been proven to reduce menstrual cramps and symptoms of endometriosis.

The effects of castor oil on period-related pelvic pain haven’t been researched in-depth, but many women use castor oil packs to relieve painful periods as a natural alternative to over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.

Castor oil packs ease joint pain

Castor oil’s anti-inflammatory properties can relieve joint pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

One study, conducted by Indian scientists, found that applying castor oil packs to knee joints provided significant relief from knee pain.

50 women between the ages of 30 and 60 were asked to massage castor oil on painful knee joints for five minutes a day, then to use a hot water bottle to heat the area for 5 to 10 minutes. for two weeks.

At the beginning of the study, 72% of women had moderate knee pain. By the end of the two-week period, only 24% of the women still had moderate knee pain; 76% had mild knee pain.

Another study, published in the journal Phytotherapy Research,  found that castor oil “can be used as an effective therapy in primary knee osteoarthritis.”

Dr. Taz confirms these benefits, noting that “castor oil can help pain and reduce inflammation to a point. It contains ricinoleic acid that reduces swelling.” (Click through for more natural cures for joint pain.)

Castor oil packs help detox the liver

Your liver helps remove toxins from your blood so that they can be filtered out of your body. It also makes white blood cells to fight infection and creates a digestive fluid, called bile, that helps digest food.

It’s thought that applying a castor oil pack to your abdomen over the area of your liver can help complement these processes. That’s because ricinoleic acid also assists with nutrient absorption and digestion.

Adds women’s health expert Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of over 35 books, “the compress helps remove toxins via the bile route.” She advises placing a warm castor oil compress below your belly button a few times a week while you relax to help your liver process toxins more effectively. Castor oil packs keep skin looking radiant

“Castor oil acts as a moisturizing agent and rehabs the skin barrier,” says Dr. Taz. “It’s also antibacterial and can act as an antifungal — the cause of many skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema and dandruff.” Note: Don’t use castor oil packs on open cuts or wounds.

How to make a castor oil pack

You can buy castor oil packs at the drugstore, but you can also make them on your own. All you need is a few ingredients and 15-20 minutes.

To do:

Ingredients for making a castor oil pack:

  • Castor oil
  • Unbleached wool craft felt or cotton flannel
  • Medium-sized plastic container or mixing bowl
  • Tongs
  • Scissors
  • Saran wrap, cling wrap, or a plastic trash bag
  • Disposable tablecloth (to protect surfaces from the castor oil)

Steps to Make a Castor Oil Pack

Step 1: Spread the tablecloth on a surface, like a counter, tabletop, or floor.

Step 2: Use your scissors to cut a large square of plastic from the trash bag or Saran wrap, at least 12 inches by 12 inches.

Step 3: Use your scissors to cut the wool felt or cotton flannel into 12″ X 10″ rectangles . The size of the rectangles depends on where you want to place the castor oil pack.

Step 4: Make at least four fabric rectangles. Anything less won’t absorb enough castor oil to work effectively.

Step 5: Pour the castor oil into the plastic container or mixing bowl. Make sure there’s enough oil to fully cover each piece of fabric. 

Step 6: Drop the first cloth rectangle into the castor oil and allow it to become completely soaked.

Step 8: Use the tongs to remove the oil-soaked cloth from the container. If the fabric isn’t dripping oil, soak it for a little longer.

Step 9: Lay the oil-soaked cloth on top of the plastic trash bag or Saran wrap.

Step 10: Soak the other pieces of wool craft felt or cotton flannel the same way.

Step 11: Lay the other oil-soaked wool felt or cotton flannel pieces on top of the first piece

Step 12: Apply the oil-soaked cloths directly on top of a specific area of skin and use the Saran wrap or plastic bag to hold it in place.

What type of castor oil should I use for a castor oil pack?

There are many types of castor oil available at pharmacies and grocery stores. Dr. Taz recommends several brands, including NOW Solutions (buy on Amazon, $8.38) and Aura Cacia organic (buy on Amazon, $8.87). There are also companies that sell pre-made castor oil packs, like Queen of Thrones. (buy on Amazon, $65.97)

How to use a castor oil pack

Step 1: Lay down on a towel or a sheet that’s okay to get dirty, as castor oil stains and some may drip out of the pack.

Step 2: Place the castor oil pack on the area of your body being treated. For example, if you want to eliminate belly bloat or treat constipation, lay the pack on your stomach. If you want to ease pelvic cramps or pain from endometriosis, lay it a little bit lower on top of your pelvic region.

Step 3: Let the castor oil pack sit. To increase its benefit, place a heating pad or a hot water bottle on top. Monitor the temperature. If the heating pad or water bottle gets too hot, it can burn your skin.

Step 4: Keep the castor oil pack in place for 45 minutes to an hour.

Step 5: Remove the castor oil pack and use a wet washcloth or baby wipe to clean up any oil that leaked onto your skin or clothing.

Step 6: Unwrap the Saran wrap or plastic trash bag covering the wool craft felt or cotton flannel. Then, put the cloth back into the container you soaked it in. Cover the container and keep it in your refrigerator. You can reuse the castor oil pack up to 30 times.

Can anyone use castor oil packs?

Castor oil packs present very few risks, but some people are allergic. If you have sensitive skin or a history of skin allergies, do a patch test before making and using a castor oil pack. To do that, rub a few drops of castor oil on your skin and let it sit for 24 hours. If the oil doesn’t cause your skin to itch or turn red, it’s probably safe to use.

If you plan on using a castor oil pack, there are several other safety measures to consider:

  • Avoid using castor oil packs if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. There’s not enough research to know how castor oil might affect your growing baby or breastmilk.
  • Never heat up castor oil packs in the microwave, as oil-soaked clothes smoke or catch fire.
  • Don’t put a castor oil pack on top of injured skin, like an open wound or a cut. Doing so can irritate the injury further or cause an infection.

Women like Danica Thomas, who lost 220 pounds, swear by the stuff, saying it caramelizes like sugar when cooked or baked and has no aftertaste. Danica tells Woman’s World that allulose played a huge role in taming her sweet tooth, allowing her to slim to her happy weight. Read on to discover how using allulose in place of your current sweetener could help transform your health.

What is allulose sweetener?

 “Allulose is a natural sugar found in small amounts in foods like figs and raisins,” explains keto diet expert and A-List Diet author Fred Pescatore, MD, one of many top experts spreading the word about allulose. Scientists call it a “rare” sugar because it’s so much less abundant that other sugars like sucrose and fructose. Since nature makes allulose in such tiny amounts, the allulose we buy in stores isn’t extracted from food but rather is synthesized in a lab, notes Dr. Pescatore.

What makes allulose better for weight loss than other sweeteners?

Unlike sucrose and fructose, allulose is a monosaccharide — a lone sugar molecule — that’s already as small as sugar can get. So the body doesn’t treat it in the same way as other sugars. “Allulose isn’t broken down by the body, so it tastes sweet but has no carbs or calories,” Dr. Pesctore explains. In fact, about 99% of allulose is simply excreted after it moves through the GI tract. Studies also confirm allulose has a negligible impact on blood sugar and insulin levels and may even lower blood sugar in people who suffer from prediabeties.

Is allulose sweetener safe?

Though it is less tested than some popular sweeteners, existing research suggests it’s safe. The FDA has given it “generally recognized as safe” status. And even cautious watchdog groups like the Center for Science in the Public Interest are on board. Their report on allulose notes that two small studies found gastrointestinal symptoms in healthy adults consuming allulose. Most of these issues were very mild. In one of the studies, the issues occurred in 30% of adults eating 30 grams of allulose a day, which is about three servings. 

How allulose can help speed weight loss  

Many common sweeteners (natural and artificial) have been shown to elevate blood sugar, which can lead to poor health and rapid weight gain. Allulose may do the opposite, triggering sugar to burn faster. So it’s possible that if you add allulose to a meal, your blood sugar might stay lower than if you skipped the sweetener. 

There’s also early evidence allulose may improve insulin levels and insulin sensitivity, potentially helping offset damage caused by other sweeteners. “As levels of blood sugar and insulin improve, allulose tells your body to stop storing belly fat and start burning it,” notes Dr. Pesctore. Animal studies hint that allulose feeds specific bacteria in our guts that help burn belly fat and increases level of belly-flattening hormone called adiponectin. In one new study, folks given allulose shrunk their waists significantly faster than those given Splenda. 

How allulose can help turn off sugar cravings

Anything that keeps blood sugar steady helps reduce cravings, notes Dr. Pescatore. So allulose has that going for it. And he adds that since allulose is 30% less sweet than regular sugar, it can help our bodies adjust to and eventually prefer a lower level of sweetness.

You can use allulose to boost results on any eating plan. Aim for 1 to 2 servings per day, using it just like sugar. Danica Thomas found herself in the ER after becoming partially paralyzed following minor surgery for a throat polyp. The doctor told her it was because of her weight — she carried 370 pounds on her 5’4″ frame. But Danica, a nurse for 24 years, knew something else was wrong. 

And she was right: When she returned to the ER the next day after her symptoms didn’t resolve, a new doctor diagnosed it as a reaction to anesthesia. Within minutes after a steroid shot, Danica was able to move again. When the doctor told her she’d be back to normal in no time, Danica thanked her. But she definitely didn’t want to go back to normal because it had become “normal” for people to dismiss her because of her weight. Even doctors did it. And she wanted to make sure it never happened again. 

Danica’s first steps to lose weight

Though Danica worked in healthcare, the Indiana grandmother had long avoided checkups. She knew her size meant she’d likely get arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes and worse. “I don’t need a lecture,” she’d tell herself. “There’s nothing I can do.” She’d tried and tried to eat less. Yet her cravings, especially for sweets, were just too intense. But her experience in the ER — being misdiagnosed because of her weight — motivated her to change.

So Danica searched the internet. What she found was mostly keto this, keto that. Apparently cutting carbs brings down blood sugar so much, your body has to switch to burning fat as fuel. Plus the articles she read insisted that keto changes your body chemistry and helps kill cravings. Intrigued, she found a free tracking app and calculated her current carb intake. The final number: over 500 grams per day.

Danica did more research and made a decision: She’d cut her carb intake in half each week until she hit a carb level that felt manageable but still helped her drop weight. She started small, trading pretzels for nuts and garlic bread for salad. After a month, she lost 30 pounds and noticed a big difference in the pain from her arthritis.

How Danica discovered allulose sweetener

As Danica worked her way down to about 40 grams of carbs a day, she was happy to find she felt physically full and her cravings were less intense. But she did miss sweets. She’d tried some dessert recipes she found online, but the sweeteners gave her bad GI upset.

1. Vanilla Cheesecake

Beat 32 oz. cream cheese and 1¼ cups Besti powdered allulose or allulose blend until fluffy. Add 3 eggs, one at a time. Add 1 Tbs. lemon juice, 1 tsp. vanilla and pinch of salt. Pour into a parchment-lined 9″ springform pan. Bake at 350ºF until center is almost set, 40–55 minutes. Chill fully in pan before cutting. 

2. 3-Ingredient Cookies

Mix 1 cup nut butter, heaping ½ cup allulose and 1 egg. Roll in 15 balls. Press on greased sheet. Bake at 350º for 12-15 minutes.

That being said, it’s no surprise that Denise has embraced the fastest growing sport in America — pickleball! “I love pickleball,” Denise tells WomansWorld.com. “It’s something everyone can do. It’s social, fun and a great workout all in one!” She adds, “It’s easy to pick up and learn, whether you’re athletic or not. Anyone can join in!”

How did Denise Austin catch the pickleball bug?

“My family and I started playing pickleball several Thanksgivings ago,” she shares. It seemed like a natural thing for her tennis-loving family to try, as Denise, who was a collegiate gymnast, married into tennis royalty.

She shared, “My husband Jeff played professional tennis and my sister-in-law, Tracy Austin, is a two-time US Open Winner!” On top of that, Denise’s two children earned athletic scholarships to play lacrosse in college — so they are always game for, well, learning a new game.

Regardless of her family’s athletic ability, Denise loves that you don’t have to be a champ — or even in great shape — to enjoy pickleball. “Tennis is very skill-oriented, where pickleball is more social and low-impact,” she says. “My husband, Jeff, and I love to play mixed doubles with other couples. It is so fun!”

Denise also routinely plays pickleball with her girlfriends and daughters, Kelly Austin and fitness influencer Katie Austin. Talk about following in her mother’s footsteps.

How popular is pickleball?

Pickleball fans are called “pickleheads,” and there are about 36.5 million of them in the US, according to the Association of Pickleball Professionals. In fact, the sport has grown an astounding 158.6 percent over the past 3 years, according to the 2023 Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s (SFIA) Topline Participation Report.

Finding a place to play pickleball has never been easier. There are currently more than 10,000 pickleball courts in the United States, according to Pickleheads.com, a site that covers all things pickleball related.

Denise lives in California, which currently has more pickleball courts than any other state, followed by Florida and Texas. Seattle, the birthplace of pickleball, is believed to have the most courts of any US city, followed by Denver.

Do I have to be athletic to play pickleball?

One of the main reasons this activity has such a surging interest is because of how easy it is to learn and get started. “I love the fact that there’s such a small learning curve so anyone can just jump in. They will get the hang of it very quickly,” explains Denise. “You really don’t even have to have a partner. Just show up to a public court and I bet there will be someone around you that loves to play! I find that it’s a fun workout for women over 50.”

For people who are thinking about trying this activity for the first time, there’s no need to feel nervous. In a classic Denise Austin peptalk, the fitness pioneer says, “You can do it! Get up and give it a try. Have the confidence and you can make it happen. Go out with a girlfriend and just start. Don’t be afraid. It’s so fun!”

Learning the pickleball rules

The sport was invented around 1965 and has been gaining momentum ever since. It is described as a combination of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. Players use solid racquet-like paddles with balls that resemble lightweight whiffle balls.

The game is played on a modified (smaller) tennis court that measures 44’ x 20’, with a net that is two inches shorter than a standard tennis divider.

Learning how to play pickleball is pretty straightforward: Serves are underhand and on the first serve, the ball must bounce before being returned. Only the serving team can win points. The first side to earn 11 points wins the game. And like ping-pong and tennis you must win by at least 2 points. The game can be played as singles (2 players) or doubles (4 players).

How does Denise Austin prepare to play pickleball?

Denise knows the perfect way to prime the body for this activity in order to feel great and avoid injuries. “Stretch your hamstrings, quads and groin area before you play and strength-train off the court,” she advises.

“Wall sits and walking lunges are my go-to stretches, and squats and lunges will help to strengthen your lower body.”

How should you dress for pickleball?

Players tend to wear athletic clothing or athleisure wear for a game of pickleball. As for footwear, Denise took her love of this sport to the next level by designing a line of pickleball shoes for Easy Spirit, available in stores July 18, 2023.

Denise Austin shares the health benefits of pickleball

Pickleball can be a great cardio and weight-loss activity — experts estimate you can burn 600 or more calories an hour playing pickleball — and it builds muscle with functional movements like bending, reaching, stepping and jumping. But women have also said they use it as a depression cure.

“I never regret getting moving or going for a walk,” says Denise. “Movement — even 10 minutes — helps your metabolism and provides benefits for your mental and physical health, which are so important.” She adds, “It’s the little things that kind of make you feel young again!”

Denise Austin isn’t the only famous “picklehead”

Lots of stars are following Denise’s footsteps and getting in on the action of this popular sport. Other celebrities who are known to enjoy a game of pickleball include Emma Watson, Jenna Bush Hager, Drew Barrymore, George Clooney and tennis greats Andre Agassi and Serena Williams.

Pickleball is more than just a game, it’s becoming a lifestyle. And that there’s more of it? Although this nuisance means more scrubbing the toilet bowl (more on the best pro cleaning tricks below), there’s a chance it’s also a clue you should get your blood sugar checked. As strange as it sounds, frequently seeing mold in your toilet could be one of the first signs of diabetes.

Although it may seem like a leap — mold in the toilet bowl and diabetes — it makes sense when you consider that the composition of your urine reveals a lot about your health and that different kinds of bacteria and fungus feed on different kinds of compounds.

The connection between diabetes and urine composition

“Your kidneys filter glucose from the bloodstream and excrete it from the body via urine,” explains Laura Purdy, MD. “If you have a high level of sugar in your blood, it’s going to come out in your urine. Which is why higher glucose in urine can be one sign of diabetes.”

Consider that the name of the disease: diabetes mellitus It’s derived from the Greek word diabetes (siphon) and the Latin word mellitus (sweet). Research shows the term has been used since as far back as 300 BC. Even ancient Greek, Indian and Egyptian civilizations took note of folks whose urine had a sweet smell.

What’s more, folks with unchecked diabetes are often thirsty. This means they drink more, and in turn, urinate more.

The connection between urine composition and toilet mold

Mold and fungi feed on sugar. If your body is flushing excess glucose, higher levels of sugar are making their way into your toilet. And, if you flush infrequently due to trying to conserve water, that sugar stays in your bowl for hours a at a time — long enough to feed microorganisms like mold.

More frequent trips to the toilet for folks with sugar-rich urine can spell trouble when it comes to persistent mold rings. While the extra toilet cleaning is a hassle, it can actually be a blessing in disguise if it helps you catch a diabetes warning sign early on.

“If you notice an uptick in urinary frequency or your urine smells sweet, you’ll want to visit your doctor for a blood test,” Dr. Purdy recommends. For more information on what kinds of tests your doctor will ask you to take, check out this American Diabetes Association fact sheet.

What else causes toilet mold?

“Mold growth is typically triggered by a combination of moisture, warmth and organic material that mold can use as a food source,” says Rocky Vuong founder and owner of Calibre Cleaning in Melbourne, Australia. “Bathrooms, and toilets specifically, can be a perfect environment for mold because they’re often warm and humid.”

You may see patches or spots of black, green, white or orange in the toilet, he adds, or notice a musty or earthy smell. “The toilet tank, in particular, is a common place for mold growth that often goes unnoticed.”

What is the best way to eliminate toilet mold?

If you notice toilet mold cropping up, there are a number of affordable household staples that can nix it fast.

White vinegar and spray bottle to help clear up mold

A powerful, all-natural solution? Vinegar! “It’s a mild acid that can kill up to 82% of mold species,” shares Vuong.

Simply pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spritz liberally onto the moldy area. Then let sit for an hour before wiping clean. Problem solved!

No vinegar on hand? Vuong says that you can also make a paste of one teaspoon of baking soda per two cups of water and apply to moldy areas. Then scrub with a bristled brush and rinse with water. Baking soda creates an alkaline environment that mold cannot survive in.

Still can’t get rid of it? Break out the bleach! “It can kill virtually every species of indoor mold,” explains Vuong.

“Mix one cup of bleach in one gallon of water, apply to the surface and scrub the mold away. Remember to wear gloves and ventilate your bathroom properly when using bleach.”

How can I help prevent toilet mold from forming?

Once your toilet is mold-free, you’ll want to ensure it stays that way! Thankfully, there are a number of steps you can take to keep things clean.

First, Vuong emphasizes the importance of cleaning your toilet at least once a week with a cleaner designed to kill mold and bacteria.

Also smart: Improving air flow in the room and keeping things as dry as possible. “After showering, keep the bathroom fan on or open a window to help remove moisture from the air.”

Finally, ensure your toilet lid stays closed between uses, says Vuong. “It can help limit the spread of mold spores.”

Health experts are sounding the alarm about a new infection making the rounds in the US. And while there’s likely not cause for concern for most folks — at this time, Candida auris is almost exclusively found in long-term healthcare settings — knowing the signs and next steps can help keep you and your loved ones safe.

What is Candida auris?

Candida auris, commonly known as C. auris, is an opportunistic fungal pathogen. It has become a quietly growing global health concern among infectious disease experts for the past decade.

It was first identified in 2009 in Japan. But the Center for Disease Control and Prevention only recently deemed the fungus an “urgent threat” in the US. Why? It’s been spreading rapidly through healthcare facilities over the last three years.

In 2021, the highly adaptive fungus presented public health officials with another challenge: It became resistant to all of the medications usually given to treat infection. This officially makes it a superbug.

How does it differ from other fungal infections?

Most people are familiar with fungal infections in their more common forms. That includes yeast infections, jock itch, ringworm, or athlete’s foot. What sets Candida auris apart is that, although it’s a fungus, it behaves in a way that infectious disease specialists are used to seeing in bacterial or viral outbreaks: thriving and spreading from person to surface, causing bloodstream infections, and evading treatment.

In a CDC report, researchers found cases of treatment-resistant Candida auris tripled in the US between 2019 and 2021. And clinical cases have been consistently increasing each year.

Where is Candida auris found?

The CDC’s Candida auris data tracker shows over half of all US states reported cases of C. auris in the last 12 months (for a total of more than 2,000 clinical cases). The states that have seen the largest outbreaks include:

  • New York
  • Illinois
  • California
  • Florida
  • New Jersey
  • Nevada
  • Texas
  • Indiana
  • Ohio

How does Candida auris spread?

Most bacteria can spread from contact with an infected surface or person. But this kind of transmission is less likely with commonly seen fungal infections. That’s because fungi need specific environmental conditions to live (think dark, damp, and warm). Candida auris breaks the mold, surviving on surfaces for weeks, according to the CDC.

“This thing gets into the environment,” saysTom M. Chiller, MD, Chief of the Mycotic Diseases Branch at the CDC. “It immediately goes from the skin right on the hospital bed, on equipment, on the floor, even windowsills.”

The high transmissibility rate of C. auris from skin to surface has prompted additional protocols to be implemented in healthcare facilities, including preventative screening of patients currently staying at long-term care facilities.

Who is at risk for infection?

Those most at risk from infection with candida auris those with weakened immune systems, such as patients in hospitals, long-term care centers, and nursing homes.

“Candida auris is developing a nasty habit of causing severe infections in hospitalized patients and those who are immunosuppressed,” says Mark Rupp, MD, infectious disease expert at Nebraska Medicine.

Additionally, those who have undergone recent invasive medical procedures or received prolonged antibiotic or antifungal treatments face an increased risk. As do individuals who have indwelling medical devices, such as feeding tubes, central venous catheters, and urinary catheters.

What are the symptoms of Candida auris?

Symptoms can be difficult to identify because most individuals who experience infection are already sick. To further complicate matters, some patients who contract C. auris experience no symptoms at all.

According to the CDC, the most common symptoms are “fever and chills that don’t improve after antibiotic treatment for a suspected bacterial infection.” Patients may also experience localized infections depending on where C. auris has colonized. This most commonly includes ear infections, wound infections, or urinary tract infections (usually due to colonization near indwelling catheters).

One concerning aspect of Candida auris is its potential to cause bloodstream infections. This can lead to severe complications, especially among those with compromised immune systems.

If someone with known risk factors for Candida auris develops unexplained infections or experiences persistent symptoms despite treatment, healthcare professionals should consider testing for the fungal infection.

How can you get tested?

C. auris can be hard to identify because patients who contract it usually already have an existing illness that may have similar symptoms.

Bhavarth Shukla, MD, Medical Director for Infection Control at the University of Miami Health System, says your first clue of a possible C. auris diagnosis could be “if the lab is taking some time to figure out what the organism is. If they’re able to tell you it’s a yeast but can’t figure out what species it is, that may be a hint that this is a Candida auris infection.”

Luckily, several new testing methods have emerged over the last five years, including an FDA-approved rapid test that provides results in under an hour.

Regular surveillance and screening of patients, particularly those with known risk factors, can also aid in early detection. The CDC provides free Candida auris testing through their AR Lab Network and provides guidance for medical facilities that want to perform in-house swab testing.

Can Candida auris be cured?

While C. auris is increasingly resistant to all three main classes of antifungal medications in the US, there is hope. If a patient contracts C. auris, it’s very likely they can still be treated and fully cured with standard antifungal medications.

Patients with treatment-resistant Candida auris infections have also responded positively to multiple antifungal medications at high doses used at the same time. Plus, scientists and public health officials are working to develop new medications to treat patients with treatment-resistant C. auris.

According to Dr. Chiller, several new antifungals are also close to being approved for use. “They’re in clinical trials — in phase 2, phase 3,” he reveals. “So I do think we’ll have a couple of potential other drugs to use.”

Researchers at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (Lundquist Institute) are also developing a vaccine for Candida auris. This would help limit the spread between vulnerable populations.

How can you keep yourself and loved ones safe?

Stop the spread from person to person

If a loved one is hospitalized or in a long-term care facility, ask their medical providers about the risk of C. auris and what protocols have been implemented to prevent outbreaks.

Experts say healthcare facilities should prioritize rigorous hygiene measures. That includes ensuring that healthcare workers and visitors adhere to proper handwashing techniques: Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol before and after touching the face or surfaces frequently touched by others. 

Stop the spread from surface to person

Additionally, robust environmental cleaning and disinfection protocols, especially in high-risk areas, can help curb transmission.

“Strategies include using the right disinfectant — not just the type of disinfectant, but the amount of time that it’s used, the way that it’s used,” says Dr. Shukla. “And sharing equipment or cohorting equipment is only to be used on patients who are colonized.”

The EPA has compiled a list of disinfecting products that kill C. auris on objects and surfaces, called List P. Healthcare facilities should use these products in the daily cleaning of patient rooms, in shared spaces, and on medical equipment.

Because Candida auris is almost exclusively found in long-term healthcare settings, most folks don’t need to worry about implementing these practices at home. With the proper healthcare facility precautions and preventative screening measures, it’s possible to stem the spread of infection.

Stressed All Day and Can't Sleep at Night? Or maybe, with all that’s on your mind, you have trouble falling asleep in the first place. And then there’s the way that stress can have you wide awake at 4 AM with no hope of falling back to sleep. However stress interrupts your sleep, it’s painful and frustrating when it does.

CDC research shows at least one in three folks don’t get enough sleep on a daily basis. And that chronic lack of Zzz’s has a way of catching up with us: Nearly 40% of adults say they accidentally fall asleep during the day at least once a month.

Maybe you’ve tried prescription meds, but either the cost or the side effects put you off so you turned to a natural cure, like melatonin, only to find that it causes some very unpleasant side effects. (For more on the possible dangers of melatonin, keep scrolling.)

Fortunately, there’s a new kid on the natural-sleep-cures block: Affron. And it looks as though it could be much more effective than melatonin, especially for people who suffer from racing thoughts and are plagued with worries.

What is affron?

Affron is a potent, concentrated extract of the vividly-hued spice saffron. It comes from the purple crocus sativa flower, which grows in the middle east as well as countries like India, Greece and Morocco. It’s even been grown in the US since the 17th century since Pennsylvania Dutch farmers first cultivated here.

Saffron and its extracts are rich in antioxidants that support healthy functioning of the immune system. It also has properties that research suggests may counteract the effects of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

And it has been effective in treating mild to moderate depression in clinical trials. That’s where clinical psychologist and researcher Adrian Lopresti, PhD’s, research into the spice as a health-booster began.

Can affron improve sleep?

While studying affron for depression, Lopresti found patients were giving feedback that the supplement was having a positive effect on sleep, too.

“We decided to conduct a clinical trial investigating its effects on sleep in people experiencing sleep disturbances,” explains Lopresti.

What he and other researchers found: In their first study, subjects who supplemented with 14 mg. of affron twice daily experienced significant reductions in insomnia. And these improvements were seen in as little as seven days.

In their second study, Lopresti and his team found similar results in people who took 28 mg. of affron once daily an hour before bed, as opposed to two smaller doses over the course of the day.

How does it deepen your Zzz’s?

“There are several factors that can influence sleep,” Lopresti says. It could be a disruption in sleep-inducing neurotransmitters or hormones such as serotonin, adenosine and melatonin. Or, could be a disturbance in sleep-suppresing neurotrasmitters and hormones, such as cortisol and noradrenaline, he explains.

“Affron has been shown in animal studies to have a positive effect on serotonin and cortisol,” Lopresti says. In other words, affron helps ensure relaxing serotonin levels increase and sleep-sapping cortisol levels decrease when bedtime rolls around. But that’s not all.

“Inflammation in the body and excess free radicals can also affect sleep,” Lopresti says. “Affron is an anti-inflammatory and strong antioxidant, so it may work via these mechanisms,” Lopresti says.

“We also found that affron can increase levels of melatonin in the evening,” he adds. “This may be another mechanism associated with affron’s sleep promoting effects.”

Rising melatonin levels in the evening are what prime the body to fall asleep and stay asleep. If your melatonin levels are not high enough when you turn in, it will take you longer to fall asleep and your slumber won’t feel as deep and restful.

Subjects in Lopresti’s studies reported improvements in their self-reported sleep quality, as well as said they felt more alert and refreshed upon awakening. That’s opposed to the “melatonin hangover” effect from melatonin supplements, which can leave you groggy the next day.

Can affron shut off ‘monkey mind’?

If you’ve ever been exhausted and eager for sleep but your mind wouldn’t stop whirling — a phenomenon dubbed ‘monkey mind‘ for the way you bounce from one thought to another — affron can help.

It has a proven ability to curb sleep-disrupting stress and improve mood. In a study in Complementary Therapies in Medicine, those who took 28 mg. of affron daily for four weeks experienced up to 77% fewer symptoms such as tension, depression, fatigue and anger. Plus, they saw their overall energy levels increase.

It only makes sense: When your mind isn’t racing because of a stress-inducing, never-ending to-do list, it improves your ability to relax and doze off.

How do you get the sleep-enhancing benefits?

To doze off faster and snooze more deeply, take 14 mg. of affron twice daily or 28 mg. of affron one hour before bed. Both methods showed positive results in Lopresti’s research.

His study subjects took affron for 28 days, which is what Lopresti suggests if you want to try it. Though he notes some people began to see improvements in their sleep after just seven days.

“I would suggest that people take it for at least a month,” Lopresti advises. “If their sleep improves, they can stop. There are no withdrawal effects. If they have future episodes of poor sleep, they can start saffron again.”

When choosing a supplement, look for one that has affron on the ingredient label. This is the copyrighted, study-proven extract and is different from other generic saffron extracts on the market. One to try: California Gold Nutrition Saffron Extract with Affron (Buy from iHerb, $26).

Why melatonin might not be right for you

In the last 20 years, use of melatonin supplements in the United States has increased by a whopping 525% . Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body that helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. So it makes sense that people would reach for over-the-counter melatonin supplements when they’re struggling to nod off.

And while intermittent use of melatonin in small doses can prove helpful, a recent JAMA study found that melatonin gummies sold over the counter can contain up to 3.5 times as much of the hormone as they say they do. And more doesn’t always equal better.

“Taking more melatonin does not result in additional benefits for sleep,” says clinical psychologist and sleep medicine expert Shelby Harris, PsyD, Director of Sleep Health at Sleepopolis. “Too much can have negative effects such as nightmares, vivid dreams, headaches and grogginess.”

“Melatonin is used to help gradually shift the body clock for people who need help adjusting their sleep schedule,” Dr. Shelby explains. “We do this using tiny doses of melatonin (½ to 1 mg. at most) multiple hours before bedtime.” But that’s not what most folks do: They often start with 3 mg. or more — and that can cause the side effects mentioned above.

How else can you improve sleep naturally?

Aside from taking affron, Lopresti says good habits like self-care, stress management and healthy lifestyle can improve sleep.

Harris also recommends the following smart steps:

  • Maintaining a consistent sleep/wake schedule
  • Limiting electronics before bed
  • Creating a relaxing bedtime routine
  • Exposing yourself to bright light in the morning
  • Avoiding caffeine for at least eight hours before bed

“All of these can all help improve sleep and enhance your body’s natural melatonin production,” says Harris.

Diana becoming the ‘people’s Princess’

At barely 20 years old, newlywed Diana brought a fresh, approachable informality to the royal family that shook their very foundation. Her connection with the public was immediate, and Princess Di became a media darling, drawing throngs at a whopping 170 official appearances in her first year of marriage alone.

Whereas previous royals greeted crowds primarily and from afar, expecting a deferential reception during the prescribed “walkabout,” Diana fearlessly waded into the multitudes, shaking hands, kneeling to eye level to greet children without restraint or distance. “I don’t go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart, not the head,” the princess said later in a 1995 interview on the BBC’s program, Panorama. “But someone’s got to go out there and love people and show it.”

Diana also tore up the royal rule book when it came to displays of affection — messy expressions of emotion that past royals felt destroyed their mystique. “She would just engulf you and squeeze you as tight as possible,” Harry observed in the documentary marking the 20th anniversary of his mother’s death. “And being as short as I was then, there was no escape — you were there and you were there for as long as she wanted to hold you. Even talking about it now I can feel the hugs that she used to give us.”

Princess Diana’s warm approach as a royal mother

Love and warmth infused Diana’s hands-on approach to child-rearing. After the births of Prince William — just 11 months into the marriage — and two years later, Harry, Diana chose to breastfeed and keep her sons close, rather than handing them off to an army of nannies as was customary palace protocol.

Following her lead, William and Kate adopted an even more modern parenting style, as captured in the endearing moment he fumbled to fasten the tiny prince into his car seat like any newbie dad. “Driving your son and your wife away from hospital was really important to me,” the prince said. “I don’t like fuss, so it’s much easier to do it yourself.”

When it came to family travel, Diana took a decidedly different tack from her mum-in-law. Queen Elizabeth II famously left her 2-year-old son Charles with his grandmother for Christmas to be with her husband, Prince Philip, in Malta. And soon after her coronation, the couple left on a six-month Commonwealth tour, leaving the children at home in England.

“Diana and Charles bucked the royal trend of separation by taking 9-month-old William, as well as his nanny, with them on the six-week tour to Australia and New Zealand,” royal expert Christopher Warwick told the Northern Echo in 2013, according to USA Today. “William and Harry were very, very fortunate with Diana as a mother because her ideas were so different to the previous generation.”

Shade and shelter

“Make sure there are shaded areas within the outdoor space where your cat can retreat during hot weather,” says Mustafa Tshash, pet behavior specialist and co-founder of Howto-pets.com. “Providing shelter, such as a cozy outdoor cat house or a covered area, protects your cat from rain, wind and extreme temperatures.” Cats also feel safe when they can hide in small and dark spaces, adds Light.

Interesting geography

Your cat doesn’t sit on top of the refrigerator just to annoy you. “Cats love high vantage points,” says Light. “They can watch for prey and it makes them feel safe. What is chub rub?

Also known as thigh chafing, chub rub is a painful, burning and sometimes bloody skin rash caused by the friction of the inner thighs rubbing up against each other repeatedly. This chafing can be caused by walking, running and/or even by wearing tight clothing. It is very common during the summer when sweating creates additional friction between thighs.

What are the best ways to heal chub rub fast?

What better way to tackle any painful skin condition than to literally let it heal as you sleep. That’s when your skin is working hardest to repair itself. The nightime remedies:

Apply cream designed to sooth sensitive nipple skin

According to New York City dermatologist Debra Jaliman, M.D., the same ingredients in nipple creams that soothe sensitive skin post-breastfeeding, work just as well to heal and repair irritation between thighs come morning. Bonus: The cream can be applied to skin before getting dressed to keep chub rub from forming in the first place.

“Calendula is rich in linoleic acid, which helps seal cracks between skin cells to heal wounds like chafing,” says New York City dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, M.D. Plus, he adds, “The botanical oil’s anti-inflammatory properties calm redness and its plant compounds fight bacteria to protect injured skin from infection.”

To do: Mix 1 Tbs. of petroleum jelly (its petrolatum moisturizes and repairs skin) with 2 drops of the calendula oil (Buy from Amazon, $16 for 3.4 oz) and apply to inner thighs before going to bed.

What household staples heal chub rub?

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is one of the most effective, low-cost and quickest cures and preventions for chub rub. According to Dr. Jaliman, the oil’s antioxidants help seal the cracks between skin cells to heal wounds, its lauric acid nourishes inflamed skin and anti-inflammatory properties ease the redness and irritation that come with the rash, Dr. Jaliman explains.

Even better? When applied to inner thighs before heading out, the thick emollient oil forms a protective barrier and gives skin some slip so thighs won’t rub so harshly against each other, thwarting chafing.

To do: Apply a nickel-size amount of coconut oil onto clean, dry skin along your inner thighs and let sit for 1 minute before getting dressed. For touch-ups when on the go, tote the oil in a small resealable container and reapply as needed.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera gel has a cooling and soothing effect on the skin, and can help reduce inflammation and redness from chafing, as well as create a protective barrier on skin to reduce friction,” says Miami-based dermatologist Anna Chacon, M.D. “Mix it with some lemongrass oil since its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties prevent bacterial growth and infections in the damaged skin.”

To do: Mix 1 Tbs. of pure aloe vera gel and 2 drops of lemongrass oil (like Aura Cacia Lemongrass Essential Oil (Buy from Amazon, $6.22). Apply to dry inner thighs daily to ease friction, heal irritation and prevent new rashes. For added cooling, you can freeze the mix in an ice cube tray and rub cubes onto chafed skin.

How can I prevent chub rub?

Rub on an anti-friction gel

Using a gel made with dimethicone, like Monistat Care Chafing Relief Powder Gel (Buy from Amazon, $5.98) can help. This silicone-like polymer dries down to a powder finish that creates a slippery barrier on skin to thwart friction-causing irritation from the get-go, says medical aesthetician Cassandra Bankson. To get the benefits, simply massage a nickel-size amount onto skin along the inner thighs before getting dressed.

Sprinkle on cornstarch

Powdery cornstarch creates an invisible protective “shield” over skin to thwart friction-causing irritation between the inner thighs to stop chafing before it starts.

To do: Pat cornstarch onto the area between the inner thighs or any other spots on the body that are prone to chafing like underarms or under boobs.

Wear thigh bands

Stylist Anna Katsanis, who has worked with Andie MacDowell and Jessica Chastain, tells her clients to slip on thigh bands like Bandelettes (Buy from Bandelettes, $19.99) before getting dressed. Like a garter, but wider and thinner, the lacy bands are made of breathable nylon and spandex and slip right over thighs to create a smooth barrier that thwarts rubbing, so you can wear skirts and dresses with confidence, says Katsanis.

Each band is lined along the top and bottom with gripping silicone, so they won’t roll down or create the appearance of unflattering thigh bulges. And while the bands are meant to be undetectable, if they do peek out slightly, the lace ensures they look like pretty lingerie.

Swipe this on

Applying a deodorant like Native Women’s Deodorant in Cucumber & Mint (Buy from NativeCos $13) on the area that rubs together before getting dressed can help. Thankfully, there’s an easy solution for the perfect flavor and texture — all you need is a little water! It sounds wacky, but adding some water to your frying pan will help bacon cook up both crispy and tender rather than hard and crumbly since it retains more moisture. Also, by the time it starts to boil, the fat will be almost completely rendered, so you’re less likely to burn the meat while the fat cooks off.  “And since the bacon cooks more gently, the slices remain flatter too,” says Woman’s World food director Julie Miltenberger. “That makes them extra perfect for adding to BLTs or club sandwiches.”

How to cook bacon in water

To cook bacon in water, start by adding just enough water to cover the strips completely, then cook over high heat until the water starts to boil. Next, lower the temperature to medium and wait for the liquid to completely evaporate. Finally, brown the bacon on low heat until it reaches desired crispiness. The result: a crunchy bite that has retained its moisture and won’t crumble on your plate. 

If you’re in a rush and need to cook up bacon extra fast, The Kitchn recommends adding less water — just enough to cover the bottom of the pan, not the meat. Regardless of how much water you add, the method also takes some of the saltiness out of the meat, which can be a good thing for those watching their sodium intake.

How to prevent bacon grease splatters

Cooking bacon in water is a surefire way to reduce grease splatters and prevent the possibility of painful burns. For even more protection, you might want to invest in splatter shield, like the Frywall Splatter Guard ($21.95, Amazon), which stops oil splashes in their tracks. Or you can skip the stovetop entirely and bake your slices in the oven. The breakfast experts at Pillsbury recommend heating your oven to 400 degrees and letting the slices cook for about 15 to 20 minutes. It’s a great technique for those times when you have a full table of hungry folks to feed and need to cook up a big batch at once. Whichever way you go, you’ll be happily chowing down on some yummy bacon.

How to store leftover uncooked bacon

Recipes often call for only a few slices of bacon, and although bacon freezes well, it’s not easy to pull out a few slices once the package has been frozen into a solid block. Next time, try this — it’s the trick Julie uses in our test kitchen: Roll up uncooked bacon slices individually, then arrange them side by side in a freezer bag and store in the freezer.
